The late German music critic Joachim Kaiser considered him the ultimate Beethoven interpreter: Rudolf Buchbinder – tackling the vivacious Piano Concerto No. 2. But before that, the evening gets underway with the magnificent Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Mariss Jansons performing the overture from “Euryanthe”. The work bears the hallmarks of high Romanticism, and with its audacious harmonics, it points the way forward to Wagner. The second movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 presents a kind of musical sketch of the dictator Stalin, before the composer hammers his own musical initials emphatically into the listener’s ears.
