The Fifth Symphony will be recorded together with Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No 1 performed by outstanding violinist Baiba Skride.

A brooding thought pervades all movements of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 from 1888. Tchaikovsky himself legitimized the interpretation as a "motif of fate" by noting in the first movement: "Introduction. Complete surrender to fate or, what is the same, to the unfathomable counsel of providence. - Allegro: grumbling, doubt, lamentation, reproach." Theodor W. Adorno stated that "the music of the end of the 19th century swept people along by combining conventionality with the drastic nature of the idea and fulfilled the function of cinema even before it was invented. These symphonies do not resemble the pretentious films one completes from the beginning to the end because they cost so much entrée." They rather resemble those that, from the very first moment, stir the wish that they may never end.
