Filmed at Tokyo's legendary Suntory Hall, pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii performs music charting Romanticism from its beginnings to its heights. First, Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata, a masterpiece from his middle period, breaks away from its Classical models to chart new emotional and harmonic territory. Then we see two different sides of Chopin's personality in the dreamy Nocturnes, Op. 27 and the rousing "Heroic" Polonaise, while Rachmaninoff is represented by transcriptions of three of his favourite songs. And the programme concludes with another transcription: Mikhail Pletnev's brilliant arrangement of music from Tchaikovsky's ever-popular Nutcracker – an irresistible finale to an unmissable concert.
