As one of the highlights of the repertoire in May, the Vienna State Opera reprises the legendary production of Tosca by Margarethe Wallmann featuring Angela Gheorghiu as Tosca and Jonas Kaufmann as Cavaradossi – two of the very best in their fach – in the main roles; the Italian baritone Marco Vratogna sings the malevolent Scarpia. The opera is conducted by the young and aspiring Norwegian Maestro Eivind Gullberg Jensen who is giving his company debut.

All three performances will be broadcast on a video screen in front of the opera house where they can be experienced live on the square for free. The performance on May 8th can also be experienced all over the world through the streaming service Wiener Staatsoper live at home; the Vienna State Opera’s main sponsor OMV invites you to stream the performance free of charge (live or at your personal prime time within 72 hours).

One of Puccini’s most intense works, Tosca is considered by many as one of the best operas ever written. The composer unites in his veristic style tragic realism with late romantic emotionalism as he relates the love-story of the artists Floria Tosca and Mario Cavaradossi, who are both physically and mentally maltreated by the cruel Baron Scarpia.
