An evening of Russian favorites. Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto is his most popular – a highly imaginative work whose rather classical form makes it highly accessible. The soloist is one of the grandes dames of the instrument, Martha Argerich, who combines beautiful tone with breakneck virtuosity.

In the second half, Lahav Shani conducts the Vienna Philharmonic with Sergei Rachmaninov’s “Symphonic Dances” – a rich work full of rhythmic power, drama and idyllic musical moments. It was Rachmaninov’s final work, and in the popular opening movement he quotes his own (unsuccessful) first symphony, whose failure plunged him into a deep crisis. Rachmaninov, who was always highly self-critical, would later describe it as his best work.
