Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita (In the middle of our life's journey) is the first line of the Song of Hell, the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. This verse is the inspiration for the new performance by the Basel-based ensemble Voces Suaves: a musical journey that takes the audience into the realm of the dead described in the Divine Comedy. The listener, in the footsteps of Dante, accompanies the wanderings of a soul in search of its place in the realm of the beyond.
An adventurous and innovative piece of writing, the madrigal combines poetry and music. Here it is placed in dialogue with excerpts read from the Divine Comedy.
