London Symphony Orchestra: Pappano & Cho
Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the LSO in a program of wit, virtuosity, and drama, being joined by Seong-Jin Cho in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
The London Symphony Orchestra launches its 2025–26 season with the energy of three landmark works. Under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, now in his second full year as Chief Conductor, the programme brings together wit, virtuosity, and drama. The concert opens with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, a subversive work that defied expectations in 1945. Soviet authorities anticipated a triumphant celebration of victory, but instead the composer delivered a score of sardonic humour and brevity, full of pointed irony.
At the centre of the evening, Seong-Jin Cho takes on Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, among the most formidable challenges in the repertoire. The second half is devoted to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, perhaps the most recognisable of all symphonies. Its iconic four-note motif propels a journey from struggle to triumph, a testament to Beethoven’s revolutionary vision. Recorded live at the Barbican Centre, this performance highlights both the LSO’s collective brilliance and the artistry of one of today’s leading pianists.
