On May 1st, the Berliner Philharmoniker with Kirill Petrenko celebrated the EUROPAKONZERT in the foyer of the philharmonic hall in Berlin. Often overshadowed by the actual concert hall with its revolutionary vineyard layout, this part of Hans Scharoun's spectacular building is no less extraordinary. With its asymmetrical surfaces, its wide staircases, and floating galleries, the foyer has inspired the orchestra and its chief conductor to create a programme that reflects this unique architecture, that plays with echo effects, proximity and distance.

The programme offers many different visual perspectives and the audience can experience the orchestra in a new light. Blacher’s “Festive Fanfare”, Ives’ enigmatic “Unanswered Question”, Mozart’s serene “Notturno” and Penderecki’s spherical “Emanations” consciously rely on the effect of spatial sound. Also, on the programme of this year’s EUROPAKONZERT: Tchaikovsky’s charming Orchestral Suite No. 3 and John Adams’ witty piece “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”.

The concert is recorded in 4K and is now available.
