Season 25/26 begins at Theater an der Wien
Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro premieres at the Kammeroper, while Strauss’ Die Fledermaus returns to its original stage at Theater an der Wien.
Rossini’s one-act opera L’occasione fa il ladro (Opportunity Makes a Thief) premiered on 23 September at the Kammeroper and runs until 14 October. The comedy of mistaken identities follows Count Alberto, who loses his suitcase, and Don Parmenione, who takes his place, while Berenice, Alberto’s fiancée, has also swapped roles with her friend. Written in 1812, the opera already shows Rossini’s lively ensembles, virtuosic arias and comic effects. Marcos Darbyshire directs, Pedro Beriso conducts the Wiener KammerOrchester. The cast includes Inna Demenkova, Alberto Robert, Roberto Lorenzi, Petra Radulovic, Ilyà Dovnar and Lazar Parežanin.
On 4 October the Theater an der Wien opened its season with Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, on stage until 24 October. Returning to its 1874 premiere venue, the “queen of operettas” is staged by artistic director Stefan Herheim. The Wiener Symphoniker perform under Petr Popelka with the Arnold Schoenberg Chor led by Erwin Ortner. Leading roles are sung by Thomas Blondelle, Hulkar Sabirova, Alina Wunderlin and Alexander Strobele. On 24 October 2025 at 9:15 pm, ORF 2 will broadcast the complete operetta.
