Opera on the Vienna New Year’s Trail
Vienna State Opera broadcasts live on the square on New Year’s Eve.
At the turn of the year on 31 December, for the 28th time, Vienna’s inner city centre will transform into the vibrant Vienna New Year’s Trail from 2 pm to 2 am. Numerous stages and stands provide all kinds of entertainment.
Opera live outdoors: This year, the Wiener Staatsoper will once again take part in the Vienna New Year’s trail, broadcasting on a 50 m2 video wall on Herbert von Karajan-Platz in front of the opera house performances of Die Zauberflöte on 27 and 29 December, Der Nussknacker on 28 December, Hänsel und Gretel on 30 December and 2 January and Die Fledermaus on 31 December and 1 January 2018.
On New Year’s Eve between 7 pm and 10.30 pm, Johann Strauß operetta Die Fledermaus will be broadcast live. In Otto Schenk’s production, conducted by Cornelius Meister, singers include Michael Schade, Laura Aikin, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Stephanie Houtzeel, Benjamin Bruns, Clemens Unterreiner. Der Burgtheater actor Peter Simonischek will perform the role of Frosch.
From 2 pm and after Die Fledermaus, a comprehensive opera potpourri will be shown on the screen until 2 am. Entry is free! Enjoy an unforgettable experience under the stars when the clock strikes twelve in front of the wings of the Wiener Staatsoper.
On 1 January, a further highlight will be available on the video wall in front of the opera: the most famous concert in the world, the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic who will be live from the Great Hall of the Wiener Musikverein from the morning. This year, the orchestra will play under the baton of Riccardo Muti.
