The Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero won a Latin Grammy in 2015 for the recording of her first composition “Expatria”. The work was performed under the direction of the Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto together with the pan-American youth orchestra YOA, which consists of music students from Central and Latin America.

With the same ensemble, Gabriela Montero performed her latest composition, the second piano concerto – titled the “Latin Concerto” – in the summer of 2017. The performance took place in one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world, the Teatro del Lago, which is located in the middle of the Patagonian plains. The concert hall, opened in 2010 in Frutillar, stands on the banks of the second-largest lake of Chile, overlooking a volcano that is capped with snow the entire year.

In an accompanying interview, Montero talks about composing, interpreting her own and other works, about her passion for improvisation, but also about her view of Latin America.
