Live on takt1: Yuja Wang & The Vienna Symphony
Virtuoso soloist Yuja Wang takes on Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto - followed by Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony with the Vienna Symphony.
In the first part of the concert, celebrated piano virtuoso Yuja Wang takes on Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a work whose challenges are musical rather than technical, giving her the chance to demonstrate her flair for fine melodic lines and intoxicating harmonies. Her piano playing leaves nobody feeling indifferent. Yuja Wang is a modern young woman, and her performances are always carefully stage-managed. “If the music is beautiful and sensual, why not dress to fit?”, argues Wang. But appearances aside: her piano playing always shimmers and sparkles.
In the second part, Lorenzo Viotti leads the Vienna Symphony through Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, with its prominent DSCH motif. It’s a gloomy work with highly political overtones; musically, it alternates between passages of intense pain and an almost unadulterated, yet ultimately deceptive lightness. An evening of phenomenally powerful music!
