Verdi: I due Foscari - Plácido Domingo at La Scala
In his ‘new life’ as a baritone, Plácido Domingo has triumphed in Los Angeles, London and Vienna. Now he takes the role of Francesco Foscari to La Scala, Milan, the theatre that is the symbol of Italian opera.
I due Foscari, premiered in 1844, famously one of Verdi’s darkest operas, is staged by Alvis Hermanis. The Latvian director brought this Venetian play of intrigues, now complete with period costume, and without breaks, to the stage of the Teatro alla Scala. Domingo is joined by two of Italy’s most exciting singers, the soprano Anna Pirozzi and the tenor Francesco Meli, and the acclaimed Italian conductor Michele Mariotti.
This performance will be remembered especially due to the star casting of the role of Francesco Foscari: Plácido Domingo, who is currently 76 years old, lends further credibility to the role with his unmistakable timbre. A role which seems to be perfectly tailored for him. The Financial Times was deeply moved by Domingo’s performance, calling his interpretation “sublime”.
