Dramma per musica in two acts (1823)

Alessandro De Marchi’s meticulously researched and prepared performance of Saverio Mercadante’s Didone abbandonata won wide critical praise at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in 2018. A genuine rarity in the theatre, Didone has strong ties to the 18th century but also points towards the bel canto innovations that were to come.

Giuseppe Saverio Mercadante was a contemporary of Donizetti and Rossini, and his prolific output of operas proved influential in founding dramatic techniques that were taken on by Verdi. The outstanding quartet of soloists – Viktorija Miškūnaitė, Katrin Wundsam, Carlo Vincenzo Allemano and Pietro Di Bianco – were also lauded for delivering dramatic performances combined with virtuoso vocal technique. Didone is performed in the lower ‘Baroque’ tuning of 430hz that would have been the convention at its premiere.
