DVD + Blu-Ray:
Gluck / Berlioz: Orphée Et Eurydice
Berlioz’s hybrid version of Gluck’s “Orphée et Eurydice” staged by Aurélien Bory at Opéra Comique in 2018 featuring Marianne Crebassa and Hélène Guilmette.
Opera in four acts (1762)
1859 version by Hector Berlioz
Libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline, sung in French
In 1859, Berlioz created a hybrid version of “Orphée Et Eurydice” using Gluck’s original manuscripts – an approach rare at the time. Stage director Aurélien Bory sees this version as a true choral opera, one that was described as “just breathtaking” by Opera Journal. The young French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa delivers a thoughtful and expressive Orphée, along with French Canadian soprano Hélène Guilmette as Eurydice, and the French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre as Amour. Ensemble Pygmalion, conducted by Raphaël Pichon, were admired by Le Monde for their “perfection of intonation” and “spiritual cohesion”.
