Der Fliegende Holländer / Theater an der Wien
Wagner’s original 1841 version of “Der fliegende Holländer” staged by Olivier Py at Theater an der Wien in 2015 featuring bass-baritone Samuel Youn.
“The Flying Dutchman”
Romantic opera in three acts (1841, original version)
Libretto by Richard Wagner
“Der fliegende Holländer” is considered to be the first “true” Wagner opera. The story of the phantom ship and its haunted master has become a sensually charged drama with tragic love and sacrifice at its heart. In this original 1841 version, staged in November 2015 at Theater an der Wien, the ultimate redemption of the opera’s central characters remains unresolved. Outstanding Korean bass-baritone Samuel Youn, Bayreuth Festival’s Holländer of choice, is paired with Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg as Senta, in Olivier Py’s lusciously dark and sensuously enthralling production. Les Musiciens du Louvre and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor deliver a vigorous performance under the musical direction of Marc Minkowski.
