Broadcast from MusikTheater an der Wien
Rossini’s “L’occasione fa il ladro” available on OperaVision from 30 January.
On January 30th, OperaVision will present Rossinis “L’occasione fa il ladro” from MusikTheater an der Wien in the Kammeroper, where it will remain available for streaming until 30 July.
The one act opera from 1812 follows a chain of misunderstandings set in motion when Count Alberto loses his luggage during a storm. Don Parmenione finds the suitcase, discovers a portrait of Alberto’s fiancée Berenice and decides to assume the count’s identity. He is unaware that Berenice has exchanged roles with her friend Ernestina in order to observe her future husband from a distance. As Parmenione courts the wrong woman and Alberto unexpectedly develops an interest in the supposed companion of his bride, the confusion ultimately resolves in a harmonious conclusion.
The opera already displays many features typical of Rossini’s later works, including lively ensembles, expressive arias and inventive instrumental effects such as his early storm music. Beneath the comic surface, the piece also touches on themes of identity, social roles and self‑discovery. The Kammeroper production directed by Marcos Darbyshire features Inna Demenkova, Alberto Robert, Roberto Lorenzi, Petra Radulovic, Ilyà Dovnar and Lazar Parežanin, together with the Wiener KammerOrchester conducted by Pedro Beriso.
The broadcast can be streamed on OperaVision until 30 July.
