Bitita: The Lyrics of Carolina Maria de Jesus
Artists from the new generation get together to celebrate the musical works of Carolina Maria de Jesus.
Writer and composer Carolina Maria de Jesus has her musical work celebrated with the show Bitita, held during the release of the album by the same name, produced by Selo Sesc.
During the show honouring the author of 'Quarto de Despejo', the main role is in the voices and drumming. The voices of Negra Duda, Girlei Miranda, Sthe Araujo and Mestre Nico mark the performances accompanied by the percussions of Xenia Barros, Maurício Badé and Cauê Silva.
Sthe Araujo, also responsible for the musical direction, says that "the idea was to return to musical traditions such as work songs and sacred music, in which the melody is led directly by the voice".
The single 'Moamba' is one of the highlights of the show and in this interpretation Nega Duda and Sthe Araujo, sing about the ills of poverty with verses like “I have no house / No food to eat / Oh God, I work so hard / And live in such poverty” .
Through her works, the writer - who transformed into art her experience living in the slums of São Paulo - has also brought to music her insightful look at poverty, racism and precarious housing, creating chronicles of the daily life that are still recognised today in countless Brazilian cities.
The concert emphasises the importance of this significant figure in the history of the black population in Brazil: Writer of her own story, Carolina Maria de Jesus is a legitimate interpreter of the country.
