BBC Proms Celebrating Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla As New Music Director Of CBSO
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra presents its new Music Director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla in the first London appearance at the prestigious BBC Proms, the night after the inaugural concert in Birmingham.
In this position Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla is not only the successor of Sir Simon Rattle and Andris Nelsons, but also the first woman conductor taking over one of the world’s leading orchestras. Combining the dynamism of youth and a profundity beyond her years, she is a creative and technical force. On the programme: Mozart’s The Magic Flute Overture, followed in the first half by Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen’s Award-winning Let Me Tell You. The song-cycle, which centres on Shakespeare’s Ophelia, using only words allotted to her in Hamlet, is performed by no less than Barbara Hannigan, for who the piece was written. In the second half, Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla and the CBSO explore Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fourth Symphony.
A production of BBC in cooperation with Unitel.

Romeo and Juliet without the balcony scene? A woman who sings the role of Romeo? Vincenzo Bellini's opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi, which premiered in Venice at the Teatro La Fenice in 1830, is remarkable in many aspects – not only the piece in itself, but also Zurich’s production by Christof Loy, who transfers the 13th century plot from Verona into a Mafia milieu from the 1950s.
