Spectrum Concerts Berlin perform Shostakovich
Jens Peter Maintz and Eldar Nebolsin live from MetaHaus Berlin.
It was Stalin himself who accused Dmitri Shostakovich 's work of "leftist self-indulgence instead of human music". On the face of it, the famous Cello Sonata Op. 40 and the Piano Sonata Op. 61 do not really sound like a hidden critique of the system. However, under the surface we feel the biting irony that is Shostakovich's trademark. Members of the Spectrum Concerts Berlin ensemble, Jens Peter Maintz on violoncello and pianist Eldar Nebolsin have a great deal to explore, both on the surface and beneath, and they do so with great mastery.
