Sean Mason Quartet
Rising jazz star Sean Mason brings his quartet to Jazz-en-Tête with a rich blend of tradition and innovation that captivates all generations.
Widely praised by NPR, Downbeat and others for its originality and expressive nuance, Sean Mason, gifted pianist and composer from Charlotte (North Carolina), has emerged as a powerful new voice in jazz.
Known for his stylistic range and emotional depth, he blends jazz tradition with a modern touch that resonates across generations in his debut album, The Southern Suite, released on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Blue Engine Records.
At the heart of this project is Mason’s trusted ensemble, featuring Chris Lewis on tenor saxophone, Tony Glausi on trumpet, Felix Moseholm on bass and Domo Branch on drums. These artists, many of whom met Mason at The Juilliard School, form a tightly knit group that channels both classic jazz influences and fresh creative energy.
In parallel, Mason's recent GRAMMY-nominated collaboration My Ideal with vocalist Catherine Russell affirms his skill as a sensitive accompanist and arranger. He has also worked with legends such as Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride and Dave Liebman, as well as contemporary artists like Masego.
Mason is equally active as a music director, notably with The Jazz Continuum (Bessie Award 2023) and The Soapbox Presents. He has also contributed to acclaimed Broadway productions such as Hadestown and Phantom of the Opera. His performance at the Jazz en Tête Festival in Clermont-Ferrand is a rare chance to experience the full scope of his talent in an intimate setting.
