A warm welcome to a new IMZ Member
The mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is one of the world's largest and most renowned universities for music, theatre and film.
Founded in 1817 as a singing school, today mdw covers a broad thematic range and offers 115 fields of study in music, performing arts, science and education. Student-centred learning and teaching in small groups contribute to the high quality of education at the mdw, which has consistently ranked among the top international universities.
Over 3,000 students from more than 70 countries study and research at the mdw's 25 departments, which in addition to the departments for instrumental subjects and music education also include the Max Reinhardt Seminar, the Filmakademie and the departments for music sociology, ethnomusicology, music therapy, composition, electroacoustics and Tonmeister studies.
Thanks to its close ties to Vienna's musical tradition and its cooperation with the city's renowned cultural institutions, the mdw offers its students the best opportunities on their way from their studies to a professional career. Alumni of the mdw include world-class artists such as Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Angelika Kirchschlager and Mitsuko Uchida.
