In its 20th season, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra opened this year's festival with Mahler's Third. Unfortunately, music director Riccardo Chailly could not conduct this momentous concert due to health issues. Paavo Järvi took over on short notice and proved to be a more than worthy substitute. In Mahler's Third, he led orchestra, chorus, and soloist Wiebke Lehmkuhl to an "air-spirited serenity" and in the second concert with Brahms 4 and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9, "Jenamy", played by soloist Maria João Pires, he "built a sanctuary of delicate grace around his soloist." (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) In memory of the 90th birthday of the orchestra's founder, Claudio Abbado, Pires, the LFO and Järvi played the famous Andante from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, which moved audience and artists alike. Brahms's Fourth then turned into a "veritable moment of glory" (Tagesspiegel) and was met with roaring applause.

The matinee concert of the soloists of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra on the festival's third day proved once more that the Lucerne Festival Orchestra is rooted in chamber music and "music making amongst friends", as Claudio Abbado so famously put it. The program with music by Dvořák, Debussy, Ravel and Arnold Schoenberg's sextet version of "Transfigured Night" was reminiscent of the first chamber music concert from the founding year.
