Ludwig van Beethoven FIDELIO
Leading dramatic soprano Lise Davidsen stars as Leonore.
The incomparable Lise Davidsen takes on the demanding role of Leonore, the faithful wife who risks everything to save her husband from the clutches of tyranny in Beethoven's revolutionary masterpiece Fidelio. Hailed as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of her generation, the Norwegian-born Davidsen brings her enormous vocal power, soaring lyricism, and dramatic intensity to this iconic character.
Completing the distinguished cast is British tenor David Butt Philip as the political prisoner Florestan, Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the villainous Don Pizarro, and veteran German bass René Pape as the jailer Rocco. Jürgen Flimm’s striking production finds modern-day parallels in Beethoven’s deeply moving tale of love, courage, and liberation focussing on the stirring celebration of freedom and the power of the individual to overcome tyranny.
"The reason to run and see the Metropolitan Opera’s revival of Fidelio can be summed up in two words: Lise Davidsen." - New York Classical Review
"This Fidelio isn’t just excellently sung, including by the Met’s sensitive chorus: Jürgen Flimm’s fresh-as-ever staging is also led with clarity, drive and insight by the Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki." - New York Times
