Johann Sebastian Bach: St Matthew’s Passion
In the year of Luther, the new Gaechinger Cantorey under Hans-Christoph Rademann performed the key work of the Protestant church.
In 2017 – the year of Luther – Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Gaechinger Cantorey took on Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion. The exceptional concert impressively documents the new sound and superb manner of playing on historical instruments, which Hans-Christoph Rademann was able to hone in masterfully with the Gaechinger Cantorey over the course of just one year.
In 2013, Hans-Christoph Rademann took over as director of the world-renowned International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, the center of research and interpretation for Bach’s music in the heart of Baden-Württemberg. Following the footsteps of its founder Helmut Rilling, Rademann merged the two ensembles: the Gächinger Kantorei and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart became the Gaechinger Cantorey in summer 2016. It was a procedure in which he carefully reformed the choir and transformed the orchestra into a baroque ensemble. Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion was performed at the Forum am Schlosspark Ludwigsburg.
The Gaechinger Cantorey was joined by the newly found educational program “Bach Bewegt!”-Ensemble: 100 students from Stuttgart schools, choreographed by Palucca pupil Friederike Rademann, which added a scenic dimension to the music on stage. It was the first audiovisual production by the Gaechinger Cantorey under the musical director of Hans-Christoph Rademann.
Recorded on March 4/5 2017 at the Forum am Schlosspark Ludwigsburg.
