State of the ART(ist) was launched in 2022 by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and Ars Electronica in response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The initiative is directed at artists worldwide whose artistic freedom is restricted by political, social, or ecological threats. State of the ART(ist) aims to provide artists with financial support, but more importantly, visibility and a platform for their work.

A jury will award two main prizes of 3,000 euros each and select eight honorable mentions who will each receive 750 euros. Furthermore, the Digital Deal Award, endowed with 2,000 euros, will also be awarded among the submissions. It honours art projects that deal with new technologies and their impact on democracy and freedom of expression. The selected projects will be presented at the Ars Electronica Festival in September and in a virtual art gallery.

We're looking forward to your projects!
