SEIJI OZAWA FESTIVAL 2016
Seiji Ozawa himself appeared on stage this year at the Seiji Ozawa Festival conducting Beethoven's 7th Symphony.
On September 1st we celebrated the birthday of one of Japan's most well-known conductors: Seiji Ozawa. He is renowned for his advocacy of modern composers and was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese Government in 2001.
In 1992, Ozawa founded the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto, an annual classical music festival held in August and September in Matsumoto, Nagoya. As of 2015 it is better known as the Seiji Ozawa Festival, where Seiji Ozawa himself appeared on stage this year with 63 members of the Saito Kinen Orchestra, passionately conducting Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.
Fabio Luisi took over the baton for Honegger's Symphony No. 3 ("Liturgique") and Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor ("The Resurrection") - the less classical but not less classy parts of the festival.
