Another resounding success, this year’s IMZ Academy Workshop on live multi-camera directing in classical music began with much anticipation on April 5, with 16 participants from all over the world joining an initial online tutorial led by award-winning director Peter Maniura.

The full-day seminar covered the basics of concert coverage via multiple camera setups with lectures by Maniura and fellow director Krišs Russman, an outline on the role of script supervisor by industry veteran Yvonne Craven and a brief introduction of this year’s host, the Gothenburg Symphony orchestra, by producer Måns Pär Fogelberg.

But grasping the theory was only the beginning: A few weeks later, participants got to apply themselves on location in Gothenburg, Sweden, further honing their skills over three days by shooting their own concert film featuring the host orchestra alongside world-famous soprano Barbara Hannigan and acclaimed violinist and conductor John Storgårds.

This rare opportunity to learn with and from the best was met with unbridled enthusiasm – Thomas Freundlich of Lumikinos Production stated that “I think I speak for all in saying that this took our skills to a whole new level and what a joy to work with this calibre of orchestra, tech team and artists," while Boran Zazan of Orchestras Canada considered it a dream setup with some of the best professionals in the industry. IMZ Academy Director Peter Maniura himself had nothing but praise for the participants, remarking that it was “A great couple of days with 16 very talented students!”

Always proud to foster talent in our specialised industry, the IMZ has organised academies for both newcomers and veterans since 2013, facilitating the transferral of skills and promoting our cultural heritage. Learn more about this illustrious event here!
