From Schein to Bach – amarcordplus
Ensemble amarcord and three guest singers presented a cappella music bei Schein, Schütz, Bach and others in empty St. Thomas Church Leipzig.
The concert recorded on 1 May 2020 was supposed to be the opening concert of the 21st a cappella festival and was now recorded in and streamed live from an empty St. Thomas Church Leipzig. The music of this concert focuses on the city in which it is performed. It includes sacred madrigals by Johann Hermann Schein (Thomaskantor from 1616 to 1630) and motets from the “Geistliche Chor-Music” by Heinrich Schütz (a collection of motets which he dedicated to the city of Leipzig and the Thomanerchor in 1648) as well as two motets by the most famous Thomaskantor: Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition, various sacred works by their less well-known contemporaries Erlebach and Liebholdt and other members of the Bach family were performed.
There is a rich variety of composers to explore who worked from Thuringia to Saxony over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries – an in the many different sound variations of the amarcordplus formation.
