The competition is designed to discover and spotlight the best young singers from around the world, in partnership with UK broadcaster Sky Arts. The overall winner will receive a top prize of £15,000 and the guarantee of a professional role within five years at one of the top international opera houses represented on the competition jury.

The biennial competition will focus on the work of one great operatic composer each time it is held. The inaugural event, culminating in March 2018 at Glyndebourne, will focus on Mozart and is open to singers of any nationality aged between 21 and 28 who are in the early stages of their professional career and ready to perform on the opera stage.

Three preliminary rounds will take place in January 2018 in Philadelphia, London and Berlin. Sky Arts is offering a bursary to cover travel expenses to the preliminary rounds of the competition for applicants from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities as an under-represented group in the opera field.

The international jury includes Sebastian F. Schwarz, General Director, Glyndebourne, Barrie Kosky, Artistic Director, Komische Oper Berlin, David Devan, General Director and President, Opera Philadelphia and Joan Matabosch, Artistic Director, Teatro Real de Madrid. The honorary president is Dame Janet Baker, whose own early career was fostered by Glyndebourne.
