Elbphilharmonie Hamburg: The Inauguration Concert
“A striking building, a scintillating concert!” (The New York Times)
The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s magnificent new concert hall, opens its doors with an Inaugural Concert Gala which musically lives up to its architectural splendour. Outstanding soloists such as Philippe Jaroussky, Bryn Terfel, Pavol Breslik, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Ensemble Praetorius et al. and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock explore the possibilities of the Elbphilharmonie’s acoustics in a refined programme that spans across musical eras from the Renaissance to the present (works by Beethoven, Britten, Caccini, Cavalieri, Liebermann, Messiaen, Praetorius, Rihm, Wagner, Zimmermann).
Also available: Documentary “The Elbphilharmonie – Hamburgs new Landmark” (53 mins). Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie is a monumental synthesis of breathtaking architecture, unique location and world-class concert hall. Thorsten Mack and Annette Schmaltz closely followed its entire development process over the course of ten years and show a story of enthusiasm and disappointment, of hard work and triumph.
