The Nutcracker at Mariinsky Theatre
Ballet in three acts. Musical direction by Valery Gergiev. Live on Mezzo from the Mariinsky Theatre on 9 June.
Premiered on 18 December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, The Nutcracker was P.I. Tchaikovsky's last ballet. It took him a year to compose what remains today one of the most popular examples of ballet music and Tchaikovsky's most celebrated work.
This production of The Nutcracker takes us back in time, being based on Vainonen's choreography (1934), one of the oldest still performed today.
