After eight programs, the Minería Symphonic Orchestra celebrated the closing gala for its 2019 summer season with a full rendition of Verdi’s Requiem.

Joyce El-Koury acted as soprano; Susan Platts, as mezzo-soprano; Kang Wang, as tenor, and Kevin Deas, as bass, participated in the vocal section. While Carlos Miguel Prieto acted as artistic director.

The 2019 summer season included several prominent composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Hector Berlioz, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Rimsky Korsakov, Gustav Mahler, and Johannes Brahms.

Performed in Sala Netzahualcóyotl, one of Mexico City’s premiere venues for symphonic music, these concerts are a true delight for melomaniacs.

Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem is, alongside Mozart’s piece, one of the most performed pieces of religious choral music. The Requiem (Messa da Requiem) was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet, novelist, and philosopher, whom Verdi admired, and first performed at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, which marked the first-year anniversary of Manzoni’s passing.

The piece, more than 90 minutes long is divided in the following sections:

• Requiem

• Dies irae
