OFUNAM Second Season 2024 Programme 2

This programme remembers the forgotten music from before the world wars. With Omar Pérez as soloist with a viola concerto from William Walton.

Under the direction of conductor Sylvain Gasançon and featuring soloist Omar Pérez, OFUNAM presents works by Franz Schreker, William Walton, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The programme includes a melancholic waltz written in 1908 during the last golden moments of ballroom dances in the Austrian Empire, evoking the final years of peace before the Great War. Omar Pérez will perform a viola concerto by William Walton, a piece that unveils the hidden romantic melodies of the viola.

This concert focuses on the Classicism movement in Austria. The viola concerto will offer the audience a new experience, allowing them to discover the sweet and romantic melodies of this rarely featured solo instrument. The programme takes us from music that was deemed degenerate by the regime's ideals during World War I, to music that was not well known outside its own country when it was written, and finally to a well-known piece from the master of the Classicism movement in Austria, Mozart.

Today's capsule topic is "El Escandaloso Vals" (The Scandalous Waltz). This segment provides detailed information about the history of the waltz, its musical and social aspects, how it evolved into the form we know today, the musicians who composed and performed it, and its influence in Mexico.
