MET OPERA LIVE IN HD – MEDEA
22 OCT 2022: Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky triumphs as the mythic title sorceress in Cherubini’s rarely performed drama – live in cinemas on 22 October.
The Metropolitan Opera’s 2022–23 Live in HD season kicks off with the Met premiere of Cherubini’s rarely performed MEDEA, which was made famous by opera’s ultimate diva, Maria Callas. Sondra Radvanovsky portrays the title character, a mythic sorceress who will stop at nothing in her quest for vengeance. The opera marks Radvanovsky’s fourth new production with David McVicar, who also designs the vivid sets for this staging. Joining Radvanovsky is tenor Matthew Polenzani as Medea’s Argonaut husband, Giasone; soprano Janai Brugger as her rival for his love, Glauce; bass Michele Pertusi as her father, Creonte, the King of Corinth; and mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Medea’s confidante, Neris. Carlo Rizzi conducts Cherubini’s masterpiece. After the premiere the New York Classical Review wrote: “This is a must-see performance to experience Sondra Radvanovsky at the height of her vocal and dramatic powers. Opera doesn’t get much better than this.” The live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic.
