MET OPERA LIVE IN HD – FALSTAFF
1 April 2023, 18:30 (CET): Verdi’s Shakespearean comedy features a brilliant ensemble cast in Robert Carsen’s celebrated staging – live in cinemas on 1 April.
After it premiered, Robert Carsen’s new production of Verdi’s masterpiece was hailed by the press as “wonderful, thoughtful, affecting and hilarious” (The New York Times). Carsen’s staging updates the action from the time of Henry IV to a richly designed England in the 1950s. A splendid cast is led by baritone Michael Volle, singing his first Verdi role at the Met as the caddish knight Falstaff, gleefully tormented by a trio of clever women who deliver his comeuppance. Reuniting after their acclaimed turns in the production’s 2019 run are soprano Ailyn Pérez as Alice Ford, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano as Meg Page, and contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Mistress Quickly. Soprano Hera Hyesang Park and tenor Bogdan Volkov are the young couple Nannetta and Fenton, and Maestro Daniele Rustioni conducts. The live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic.
