Live on takt1: BRSO + Mariss Jansons
Internationally celebrated organist Iveta Apkalna on tour with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Mariss Jansons.
A programme full of rapturous and monumental moments: Internationally celebrated organist Iveta Apkalna on tour with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mariss Jansons. Together, they perform Saint-Saëns' vast Third Symphony, the so-called "Organ Symphony". The organ doesn’t show up until the second movement, making a heroic appearance at a monumental forte before giving way to a gentle melody with shimmering piano arpeggios. Saint-Saëns used the work to conduct a highly creative experiment with symphonic form and orchestral tonal color.
Before that comes Dvořák's Ninth, the "New World Symphony". It is often claimed that Dvořák incorporated Native American motifs into his work – an anecdote which the composer himself exposed as utterly unfounded. Nonetheless, he did compose the work on American soil, giving rise to its popular title. It is not actually programme music – although it was inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow‘s Native American epic poem “The Song of Hiawatha”. The wealth of wonderful themes and melodies made the Symphony the Czech composer's most popular work.
