Flagey celebrates Beethoven with 2 concert cycles
Next season, Flagey celebrates Beethoven 2027 with the Quatuor Ébène’s string quartet cycle and the completion of Boris Giltburg’s sonata cycle.
In celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 200th anniversary in 2027, Flagey presents two major cycles exploring his work. Quatuor Ébène begins its complete string quartet cycle in autumn 2026, to be completed the following season. In spring 2027, Boris Giltburg brings his cycle of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas to a close, adding an unexpected symphonic dimension.
Quatuor Ébène – Beethoven String Quartet Cycle (20–22 November 2026)
From 20 to 22 November 2026, Quatuor Ébène presents the first chapter of its complete Beethoven String Quartet Cycle, to be concluded the following season. Few ensembles are better suited to this musical journey: the French quartet has recorded the complete quartets and performed them in acclaimed cycles across the globe. Each concert traces a different path through Beethoven’s quartet universe, from the elegance of the early works to the visionary depth of the late masterpieces.
Boris Giltburg – Beethoven Sonata Cycle (25–27 March & 4–6 June 2027)
Following the first part at Flagey last season, Boris Giltburg completes his Beethoven Sonata Cycle with six concerts in March and June 2027. For this final chapter, the cycle expands beyond the piano: each three-concert series combines one solo recital with two concerts alongside Brussels Philharmonic. In this distinctive format, Giltburg performs Beethoven sonatas before the interval, while the orchestra explores symphonic works by Beethoven, his contemporaries and his successors after the break.
