Gaveaix: Léonore / Opera Lafayette
The Washington, D.C.-based Opera Lafayette production of the rarely staged Pierre Gaveaux’s opera Léonore, the direct forerunner to Beethoven’s Fidelio.
Pierre Gaveaux’s opéra comique Léonore, ou L’Amour conjugal has been described as ‘one of the most famous pieces of lyric theatre that virtually no contemporary audience has ever witnessed.’ The premiere at the Théâtre Feydeau, Paris in 1798, received widespread critical acclaim and provided the source material for Beethoven’s Fidelio. This modern premiere by the Washington, D.C.-based Opera Lafayette, conducted by artistic director and conductor, Ryan Brown, features the rising Canadian opera stars Kimy Mc Laren as Léonore/Fidélio, Jean-Michel Richer as Florestan and Tomislav Lavoie as Roc. Oriol Thomas makes his Opera Lafayette debut as stage director in this ‘uncommonly rewarding’ production from the Gerald W. Lynch Theater, John Jay College, New York, in 2017.
