Carmen received its premiere at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1875, and this internationally acclaimed production, performed on period instruments by the excellent Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique conducted by period music specialist Sir John Eliot Gardiner, represents a triumphant return to its home theatre.
‘Stage director Adrian Noble, a former head of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, created an intense, elegant, cliché-free staging that tells the story with an engaging freshness. The grand Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci was in top form for this role’ (operatoday.com).
‘Carmen has never sounded more revolutionary, romantic or thrillingly vibrant’ (The Times, London).
