CD:
Rachmaninoff Live
Mikhail Pletnev and the Rachmaninoff International Orchestra (RIO) performed all four Rachmaninoff piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
2023 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of twentieth-century composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose work is beloved for its breathtaking drama, absolute passion and the extraordinary technical sophistication.
In the piano repertoire there is hardly a more challenging task than performing Rachmaninoff’s complete piano concertos – and Mikhail Pletnev fulfils this task with brilliance.
Rounding out this concert is legendary maestro Kent Nagano, who leads Pletnev and his ensemble with his usual deft hand and the unshakeable confidence required to unify these monumental works.
This is the second release and the first public concert of the newly founded Rachmaninoff International Orchestra, which is named after the composer, pianist and conductor, Sergei Rachmaninoff. Like its namesake the Rachmaninoff International Orchestra is committed to achieving artistic excellence.
