CD:
Gidon Kremer plays Weinberg’s 24 Preludes Op.100
In his first release on Accentus Music, Gidon Kremer presents his ingenious arrangement of the Weinberg Preludes in a world premiere recording!
The 24 Preludes for violincello solo by Mieczysław Weinberg reveal an aphoristic musical language that is often brutal, provocative, and is at times marked by inner conflict. Composed in the late 1960s for Mstislav Rostropovich, these musical cross-references that Weinberg weaved into the musical material were most likely intended to conceal certain ‘uncomfortable’ contexts from the Soviet censors, who often made the performance of his music difficult during his lifetime.
Gidon Kremer arranged the Preludes for his instrument, and performs the works with projections of selected photographs by the famous Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus. Accentus Music joined forces with Kremer to produce the world premiere recording of his arrangement on CD, the first joint project with the great violinist. One of Sutkus’ photographs is featured on the cover of the CD.
Gidon Kremer's earlier approaches to the music of the long neglected, brilliant composer Weinberg, whom many regard as the musical heir of Dmitri Shostakovich, have received acclaim by music critics all over the world. Kremer, with his very own tone, is the ideal interpreter for this exciting repertoire.
In May, the documentary “Gidon Kremer – Finding Your Own Voice” by Paul Smaczny will be released on DVD. The release will be combined with the audiovisual recording of Gidon Kremer’s concert “Preludes to a Lost Time” filmed at the Gogol Center Moscow in late 2017.
