Beethoven: the heard and the deaf
What was the cause of Beethoven’s hearing impairment and could modern medicine have helped him? The Medical-musical symposium in October 2020 in Bonn.
What is the relationship between his increasing deafness and his musical creative process? What effect did the composer have on his time and beyond?
These and other questions will be explored by international scientists, doctors, and specialists from all over Europe in Bonn on 16 and 17 October 2020. The musical-medical symposium “Beethoven: the Heard and the Deaf” is organized by the Beethoven Jubiläums GmbH in cooperation with the University Hospital Bonn and the Freiburg Institute for Musicians’ Medicine.
“We are very pleased that this extraordinary project can be realized as early as 2020, despite a huge organizational effort. The symposium, with its music medicine perspectives, invites to rediscover and get to know Beethoven in a way that is entirely in keeping with the anniversary theme,” explains Ralf Birkner, commercial director of the Beethoven Jubiläums GmbH.
“Beethoven: the Heard and the Deaf” will take place on Friday, 16 October 2020, in the afternoon and on Saturday, 17 October 2020 all day, in the lecture hall of the Biomedical Center of the University Hospital Bonn. Those interested can register at:

Admission is free of charge.
All results of the symposium will be available afterwards on the official website as a free download.
