18 JAN 2025: Johann Strauss’ Das Spitzentuch der Königin returns to stage at Theater an der Wien with a live TV-broadcast on 3sat and a radio-transmission on Ö1.
Johann Strauss’ operetta Das Spitzentuch der Königin returns to the stage of its 1880 world premiere at Theater an der Wien, marking the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth. This production opens the newly renovated Theater an der Wien with its premiere on 18 January 2025, at 19:00.
LIVE STREAM
Audiences across Europe can join the celebration through a special TV-broadcast on 3sat, airing the same evening at 20:15. For radio listeners, Ö1 will feature a live transmission at 19:00. Both the 3sat broadcast and the Ö1 transmission will be available online for rewatching and relistening after the event.
ABOUT
Directed by Christian Thausing and conducted by Martynas Stakionis, the operetta features the Wiener KammerOrchester and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor, with a stellar cast including Diana Haller, Elissa Huber, Beate Ritter, Regina Schörg, Maximilian Mayer, Michael Laurenz, István Horváth, and Alexander Strömer.
The satirical plot centers on political intrigue at the Portuguese royal court, with Cervantes playing a key role in restoring order. Strauss’ melodies, including themes later adapted into his waltz Rosen aus dem Süden, bring charm and energy to the piece.
