He performs in La Scala in Milan, in Covent Garden in London, and also in Metropolitan Opera in New York. The director Martin Kubala maps Štefan Margita‘s successful carrier and offers an insight into his personal life. Visitors of this year’s Golden Prague festival will be the first to watch the documentary about the Slovak opera singer.

When shooting a film about the life and work of the tenor Štefan Margita, filmmakers had to travel more than seven thousand kilometres. This is the distance between Košice, a place where the opera singer was born, and New York, the westernmost shooting spot and the seat of Metropolitan Opera where Margita performed. During the shooting the crew, headed by director Martin Kubala, visited also Zlín, Olomouc, Prague and Berlin.

Štefan Margita originally studied to become a photographer, but later he was enchanted by theatre and singing. In 1986, at the age of thirty, he won the Prague Spring International Competition and in August the same year he started performing in the National Theatre opera. At the same time he was a solo singer at the Vienna Volksoper and also worked in the State Opera. Eventually, he chose the life of a freelance artist.

The documentary about a world-famous tenor who regularly performs in opera and concert halls in London, Madrid, Milan, Turin, but also in Paris, Sao Paulo or Tokyo will have its premiere in Golden Prague festival in September this year. It will be introduced by the director and Štefan Margita himself.
