The Gershwins' PORGY AND BESS wins Grammy® Award
The Metropolitan Opera's recording of PORGY AND BESS, distributed by Clasart Classic, wins the renowned Award in the category Best Opera Recording.
During the 2019–20 season, one of America’s greatest operas returned to the Met stage for the first time in 30 years: The Gershwins’ portrayal of the lives and struggles of a segregated African-American community in Charleston, S. C. James Robinson’s vibrant new production of PORGY AND BESS transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront with vibrant choreography by Tony Award–nominee Camille A. Brown.
In this now Grammy awarded production, bass-baritone Eric Owens and soprano Angel Blue star in the title roles, headlining a phenomenal ensemble cast including Latonia Moore, Ryan Speedo Green, Alfred Walker, Golda Schultz, Denyce Graves, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus. For Eric Owens, this is his second honour in the Best Opera Recording category; he previously won in 2011 for Adams' DOCTOR ATOMIC. David Robertson conducts this beloved score, which features some of the best-loved songs by one of America’s greatest songwriters (“Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So", “I Loves You, Porgy”), as well as mighty choruses and bold orchestrations.
