Tetzlaff Quartett plays Dvořák & Schubert

The Tetzlaff Quartett brings Dvořák and Schubert to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, two late masterworks, one uncompromising ensemble.

Founded in 1994 by violinist Christian Tetzlaff and his sister, cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, the Tetzlaff Quartett has spent three decades building a reputation for interpretations of uncommon intensity, dramatic, structurally clear, and never comfortable with the merely polished. The New York Times called them "energetic, dramatic and of crystal clear intensity." Their discography, which includes prize-winning recordings of Berg, Mendelssohn and late Beethoven, has earned the ensemble a place among the most respected string quartets of their generation.

For this concert at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, the four musicians, Christian Tetzlaff and Elisabeth Kufferath on violin, Hanna Weinmeister on viola, Tanja Tetzlaff on cello, bring together two of the most demanding works in the late Romantic chamber repertoire.

Dvořák's String Quartet No. 14 in A-flat major, Op. 105, was composed in 1895, shortly after his return from America, and stands as one of his most lyrical and emotionally complex achievements. Schubert's String Quartet No. 15 in G major, D. 887, his last, is a work of extraordinary scope and darkness, nearly an hour long, and among the most searching pieces ever written for four strings. Together they form an evening of rare weight, delivered by an ensemble built for exactly this kind of music.
