Tap Dancing Broadway Star Maurice Hines Dies at 80
Broadway dancer and actor Maurice Hines died on 29 December 2023 of natural causes at 80.
Known to be the first African American to direct New York's famed Radio City Music Hall, he was also an in-demand choreographer and director.
Hines forged a trailblazing 70-year career creating, choreographing, directing and starring in Broadway shows — and also performing all over the world — all the while overcoming prejudice against Black entertainers in leadership roles, and also prejudice against out gay men and out gay Black men.
The multi-awarded documentary Maurice Hines - Bring Them Back, reflect on his song-and-dance life from Broadway to Hollywood, as well as his tumultuous relationship with superstar brother Gregory Hines & the professional challenges of being an openly gay black man throughout his career since the 60s.
