On 02 February 2020, the documentary film “Beethoven’s Ninth – Symphony for the World” will be broadcast on ARTE. The film (produced by Sounding Images GmbH) focuses on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, with its universal message of joy and brotherhood. Around the world, the symphony connects people and inspires poets, authors and artists, as well as politicians and revolutionaries.

Therefore, a social media challenge with the hashtag #beethoven9challenge has been created to encourage musicians and artists of all genres to create their own version of the “Ode to Joy”. We all know the piece by heart and as it is quite washed out, we want to revive its melody with fresh interpretations.

How can you take part? The participants film themselves while they play or sing the famous piece, using a phone will do the job. Afterwards, they nominate artists of their choice to take part in the challenge as well. Until now, we have received a large number of user-generated, fantastic Odes – from rap versions to improvisations on the violin.

We are now looking to expand our circle of participants, so if you love a good challenge, grab your instrument and create the Ode in your own, very special way! Information about the challenge and some great examples of participants' videos can be found under the hashtag #beethoven9challenge and on our Facebook and Instagram pages:
