SF Dance Film Festival Announces Award Winners
SF Dance Film Festival is pleased to announce the award-winning films from its 2020 festival, selected by an independent jury.
SF Dance Film Festival has announced the awards from its 2020 festival, which streamed October 18-25 to global audiences on Marquee TV.
Six awards were decided by an independent jury: Best Documentary Film went to BEYOND MY STEPS, a portrait of the Contemporary Dance Company of Angola praised for its stunning cinematography and intimate depiction of individual dancers.
Best Art/Experimental Film was awarded to TOM, Wilkie Branson’s moving portrait of isolation and resilience realized through astounding cutting-edge technology.
Best Screendance Film Over 10 Minutes went to THE CONVERSATION, a sensitive rendering of interracial relationships told through multi-layered choreography and seamless production.
HUMAN HABITAT, filmed in the Arctic, was awarded Best Screendance Film Under 10 Minutes for its evocative and visually spectacular response to the changing environment.
Best Music Video went to SPAR WITH TRUMP, a frank and unmediated response to a critical cultural moment.
Finally, Best Student Film was awarded to FAMILY PORTRAIT, a beautiful, compelling dance story about intergenerational family bonds.
Two final awards, not decided by the jury, round out the laureates. The Audience Award went to UPROOTED, whose deep dive into the overlooked history of jazz dance consistently inspired audiences and ignited timely conversations.
SFDFF’s Embodiment Award went to Yak Films, an Oakland-based production company whose widely-shared films elevate and celebrate the art of street dance.
